The SETI@Home Harley Netscum Group
SETI@Home just posted a new version, SETI@Home 2.0. Why not join the fun and search for intelligent aliens who do not drive minivans? So far we have 42 Netscum who have processed 10.35 years (cpu time) worth of data ( 4418 result sets ).
I just created a new group for the SETI@Home project called "Harley Netscum".
The description of this group is as follows: "A collection of Harley Davidson riders from the Harley Digest, rec.motorcycles.harley and other online places who are searching for intelligent life that does not drive Minivans!"
What is SETI@Home? To quote the creators:
"SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth."
You basically download a special screensaver for your computer. When you are not using your machine the screensaver kicks in (optionally displaying some way kewl FFT graphics) and processes packets of ratio telemetry from the Arecibo dish complex searching for signs of intelligent life from space. Note that the screensaver does NOT use any of your machine horsepower except when the screensaver is running and you do NOT need a permanet net connection. The software is quite flexible and configurable.
You can find more detailed info on SETI@Home along with the screensaver at: http://www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
If you decide to participate, go to the Groups link and do a search for "Harley Netscum"....and join the club of online HD Netscum looking for extraterrestrials that do not drive Minivan Flying Saucers. Dana an I have been running this stuff on 3 of our four machines for quite a while and find it quite enjoyable. We were members of the RAB team (rec.arts.bodyart) but figured that the Netscum needed their own group since many "normals" think bikers are aliens and thus help to find aliens who share our motorcycling passions! If you are already a SETI@Home participant, why not consider switching your allegience to the Harley Netscum club?
I hope you will consider joining the search.....
